In 2009, Peter Buchanan-Smith founded Best Made Company in his garage with just a few axes and no business plan. The brand quickly gained international recognition for its thoughtfully designed products and established retail locations in NYC and Los Angeles. However, in 2019, Peter made the difficult decision to leave the company to pursue new projects, shortly after which BMC was sold to Duluth Trading.
Fast forward to 2023: Peter received an unexpected offer to repurchase the company. Seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, he aimed to rebuild the brand and create something new and unexpected. With a new vision in mind, an artisan product catalog that I was already familiar with, and a design-led process focused on intricate details, the direction for the new website drew inspiration directly from the makers and the tools/objects found in workshops.
The design was intentionally kept minimal, featuring an exposed grid, rich textures, unique contemporary typefaces, and stunning product and lifestyle photography that Best Made Co. is renowned for. This new design direction not only honors the brand's celebrated legacy but also introduces a refreshed visual identity for its new chapter.
The new #Shopify website was designed and developed as a modular system, allowing the BMC team to easily create new pages or rearrange sections to display various types of content, products, or special highlights.
